Textile Postcard Project Week # 35

May 27th- June 2nd 2018
Week # 35

Beautiful Butterfly
About 30 years ago I had a passion about butterflies. There were many fabrics on the market featuring these beautiful creatures.
My enthusiasm was fueled by the sight of the brightly coloured blue and black Ulysses butterflies we saw when travelling up Cape York in Northern Queensland during the winter of 1990.
I recently found a small and forgotten box of applique motives that I had made by machine. This butterfly is not copied from real life but was created as I stitched.  The background fabric is hand dyed muslin.

Textile Postcard Project Week # 34

May 20th - May 26th 2018

Two scraps of thick Russet coloured felt

The last of the scraps of hand made felt from Kazakhstan. Cross stitch was my choice of stitching to  decorate and applique a strip of hand dyed cotton fabric bonto the thick felt using a cotton thread which I have dyed myself.

Again I have used the russet coloured handmade felt from Kazakhstan. Hand dyed strips of cotton fabric have been appliqued or couched with cross stitch using hand dyed cotton thread.

Textile Postcard Project Week #32

 May 6th - 12th 2018

Russet red handmade felt
The Russet red hand made felt also comes from Kazakhstan where it is hand made and hand dyed. It is so very thick that I am sure it would be a wonderful material to make coats, cloaks or vests from to keep out the bitter cold winds of winter which people have to endure...many of whom would have animals to care for outside.

The colour of this remnant is rich russet red, quite different from the last postcard. I have appliqued some hand twisted thread onto it.
Close up view shows the attractive twist in the yellow-green thread.
